that the data collected at rocky shores by MARINe biologists is
used by educators, decision makers, and scientists to understand
and conserve rocky intertidal communities. To this end, we
publish results in a variety of forums. Feel free to contact
members of MARINe for additional information.
Tidepool Math - linking scientific method concepts to tidepools.
Tidepool Math is designed to help students understand
scientific method through the fun study of tidepools. At the
K-8 level, students use a plot of a mussel bed to better
understand the scientific applications of counting and
estimating. They also learn that their environment is
constantly changing and learn ways to “sample” and “monitor”
change. At the high school level, students learn the concepts
behind designing a field sampling program and learn the
differences between random, systematic and targeted sampling
approaches. They are also introduced to simple statistical
tools used to analyze environmental data.

LiMPETS – Long-term Monitoring Program and
Experimental Training for Students. LiMPETS is an
environmental monitoring and education program for students,
educators, and volunteer groups throughout California.
Students and teachers collect rocky intertidal and sandy beach
data as part of the LiMPETS network and compare their results.
LiMPETS is sponsored by the
NOAA Marine Sanctuary Program.
